You should obtain entry clearance before you leave your home country. This can be a visa, entry certificate or a letter of consent depending on your country of origin. This may be obtained from a British Embassy or High Commission and there may be a charge.

If you are coming to the UK for private medical treatment then you would be admitted for 6 months and there may be restrictions on your ability to take any form of employment.
If you need to stay longer than six months to complete your medical treatment you can apply to the Immigration and Nationality Department who will charge a non-refundable fee for any extension application.
Please note you may not be allowed to enter or stay in the UK to receive free treatment on the National Health Service (NHS).
As stated by the Home Office the requirements to be met by a person seeking leave to enter the United Kingdom on a visitor visa are that he / she:

is genuinely seeking entry , not exceeding 6 months; and |

intends to leave the United Kingdom at the end of the period of the visit as stated by him / her; and |
 |
does not intend to take employment in the United Kingdom; and |
 |
does not intend to produce goods or provide services within the United Kingdom, including the selling
of goods or services direct to members of the public; and |
 |
does not intend to study at a maintained school; and |
 |
will maintain and accommodate him / herself and any dependants adequately out of resources available
to him / her without recourse to public funds or taking employment; or will, with any dependants,
be maintained and accommodated adequately by relatives or friends; and |
 |
can meet the cost of the return or onward journey. |
On your arrival in the UK you will have to pass through Immigration Control. Make sure you have all your documents with you. The Immigration Officer will place an endorsement in your passport confirming how long you can stay along with any other additional restrictions.
Some Useful Points:
Check well in advance that your passport is still valid
Ensure that you have all the relevant documents
Be truthful but tactful in your responses to the visa officer
Stress that your aim is to get treatment and return to your country
